McChrystal: More Forces or 'Mission Failure'--WaPo
Pay attention to this. The talking heads bickered all weekend about standing up more Afghan forces immediately so that we don't have to bear this load.
Well, that's not quite how it works. The Afghans don't have the resources for this war. Training the Afghan army has been a miserable experience. The vast majority of the recruits can't even read. That means no manuals, no maps, no notes and no written rules of engagement. An army that can't read in 2009 isn't an army at all.
The elections didn't exactly go off without a hitch. The Taliban is resurgent, aggressive, well-equipped and essentially fearless. To beat them on their own turf we're going to need overwhelming force.
